Opening Shot test

Hi Guys, Finally some activity from little old me, I've been pretty caught up in all kinds of commercial work again, but this test shot of the opening scene I did manage to produce in the late hours. The idea is to start out mysterious and show the remaining island vegetation in the most gracious but fragile way possible. I'm aware the trees wibble to much, and I want to replace the particles with animated fireflies, but that is all for later concern. I just wanted to share this little test with you because I think it's quite pretty.

Easter Island - The Mystery of the Moai

Easter Island was named such because it was discovered in the 1600s on Easter Sunday. The mysterious moai are all carved from basalt, excavated right on the island. Many of the colossal stone figures have been restored, but nobody knows why they were built in the first place.

Pictures (I found on several websites)!! I put it together for a presentation on Rapa Nui aka Easter Island in my Spanish class. The song is by a famous group from Rapa Nui called Matato'a.

[NGC] Explorer - Easter Island Underworld_clip4.mp4

On legendary Easter Island, a team of National Geographic explorers and scientists undertakes a groundbreaking expedition: to attempt a first-ever mapping of the vast cave system beneath this enigmatic isle. We ride along as the team rappels down sheer cliffs, crawls through narrow labyrinths, and even dons SCUBA gear to complete their task. Deep beneath the earth, in caverns that have been forgotten for centuries, these adventurers discover human remains and telltale artifacts. Together, these finds reveal an astonishing history that is brought to life in startling re-enactments. It is a tale of ingenious achievement, environmental catastrophe, and brutal social breakdown one that remains a haunting lesson for all of us, similarly trapped on an island planet of our own. MYSTERIES OF EASTER ISLAND: Easter Island has always been a mystery. Scientists and explorers know that it was once inhabited, but there is little evidence as to what happened to these original populations. Was it conflict? A lack of resources? A natural disaster? The famous giant moai statues give the island an eerie, lonely atmosphere. But these statues are not the only mysteries contained within the island's history: Recent research suggests there may have been close to 16 million palm trees on Easter Island before they disappeared sometime before 1722 when Europeans arrived. Pollen analysis and seed shells indicate the original palm forest included trees similar to a Chilean palm that can grow up to ...

Mugiwara Theater 04 Jinginai Time

Jinginai Time, meaning No Respect Time. It begins with a row of Moai statues (the statues on Easter Island) complaining about their boredom. It then continues on with the real story. Don Luffione (Luffy), Don Zoroscia (Zoro), and Don Sanjino (Sanji) are the leaders of three separate gangs, each named after the its leader. The three argue about who is going to be the leader of their island, and Zoroscia ends up declaring war (despite the fact that the other two were the ones who were arguing). Luffione sends in Usotuya (Usopp), who goes to kill Zoroscia and is killed in the process. Sanjino then sends in Choparini (Chopper), who goes to kill Luffion and is killed in the process. Zoroscia then sends in Namimore (Nami), who kills Sanjino. She then goes off in search of money, and finds huge amounts, causing her to die of happiness. Zoroscia then sends in Robita (Robin) to kill Luffione, but she refuses and shoots Zoroscia instead. However, it ends up that he shot her as well, so both end up dying. Luffione, now the only one left standing, happily declares that this makes him the leader of the island, meaning he can eat as much meat as he likes; however, he quickly learns that it doesn't taste good at all when he's alone. He then cries about how lonely he is, and begs that, if it is a dream, he should be allowed to wake up. At this point, one of the Moai from the beginning wakes up, saying that it was just a dream. All the gangsters (including the dead ones) then ask who he ...

Moai - The Easter Island Tiki

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When most people imagine Easter Island, they immediately think of the Moai. Moai are immense human figures carved from rock between the years of 1250 and 1500 on Easter Island, a Polynesian island several hundred miles off the coast of Chile.

Many myths and legends are attached to ancient Polynesian cultures, including the Easter Island Moai culture as well as the tiki gods found elsewhere in Polynesia. Many apply the term 'Tiki' to any carved human figures originating in Polynesia. In fact, the Moai are often referred to as the "Easter Island Tikis" because of the stylistic similarities between these figures and the tiki found elsewhere in Polynesia.

As found in America, popular Tiki culture combines elements that are actually found in distinct cultures, including Hawaiian, Polynesian, Maori from New Zealand, and the culture of Easter Islande. Many do not realize that tiki culture has such varied roots. In the United States, these distinct cultures have been blended into popular tiki culture. However, upon visiting the islands themselves, the differences become apparent.

The oversized heads of the Moai are often confused with the tiki gods from elsewhere in Polynesia due to their minimalist style. Both Moai and Tiki carvings portray human faces or humanoid forms, often with a very small body if one is carved at all. Like the tiki figures, the Moai have relatively flat faces and very large and elongated heads when compared to their bodies. Similarly to popular tiki imagery, the Moai on Easter Island have large, broad noses.

Carved wooden and stone statues were created all over Polynesia as far back as 1500 BC. Over time, the style became varied between the different islands of the region. This, perhaps, accounts for the minor stylistic differences between the Moai figures of New Zealand and tiki carvings found on other islands.

There are certainly many superficial similarities between the two types of carvings, but what about the symbolism? On many islands, the Tiki myth is connected to a legend about the first man. Later, tiki statues became representations not only of this first man, but also other spiritual symbols, such as tiki gods. Moai statues represent the living faces of powerful former chiefs, ancestral spirits, and mythological beings. It has been argued that Moai statues, carved in the shape of gods, served to house the gods' spirits. Many find similarities between the legends behind the creation of Moai monolithic heads and that of Tiki statues.

This popular tourist attractions are considered a remarkable feat, similar to the pyramids in Egypt. The tallest moai on the island, known as Paro, measures over 30 feet tall and weighs 75 tons. It is believed that there were once over 900 of these large statues. Today, groups of the Moai still exist in several locations around the island. Many are found on Polynesian ceremonial sites known as Marae. Throughout the Polynesian world, both moai and tiki traditions evolved at these Marae sites. Both tiki and Moai statues were used to mark the boundaries of sacred sites. One such place on Easter Island, known as Rapa Nui, is the location of a famous example of Moai stone figures set in a ring.

Moai en Rano Raraku

Moai tallado en la piedra en Ranu Raraku, isla de Pascua

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNu8_343BuI&hl=en

British Museum "Moai" Eastern Island

Travel to Easter Island (2005). Viaje a la Isla de Pascua (2005). Easter Island (Rapa Nui in Tahitian and today also in Rapa Nui language, Isla de Pascua in Spanish) is an island in the south Pacific Ocean belonging to Chile. The island is famous for its numerous moai, the stone statues located along the coastlines. Easter Island was given its common name of "Easter" because the first recorded European visit, by the Dutch Admiral Jacob Roggeveen, was on Easter Sunday, 1722. The island's official Spanish name, Isla de Pascua, is a direct translation of "Easter Island". The current Polynesian name of the island, Rapa Nui or "Big Rapa", was coined by labor immigrants from Rapa in the Bass Islands, who likened it to their home island in the aftermath of the Peruvian slave deportations in the 1870s. However, Thor Heyerdahl has claimed that the naming would have been just the opposite, Rapa being the original name of Easter Island and Rapa Iti named by its refugees. There are several options for the "original" Polynesian name for Easter Island. Most often mentioned is Te pito o te henua, or the "The Navel of the World" due to its isolation. Legends claim that the island was first named as Te pito o te kainga a Hau Maka, or the "Little piece of land of Hau Maka". La Isla de Pascua (idioma rapanui: Rapa Nui) es una isla ubicada en el Océano Pacífico y corresponde a la más grande de Chile insular. Tiene una superficie de 163,6 km² y una población de 3.791 habitantes, concentrados ...

Decorating Your Tiki Bar

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The tiki bar is a wonderful place to hang out, relax, or go all out and party. There's nothing quite like a tiki bar to take you away from the everyday mundane life, transferring you to a tropical vacation atmosphere, all without the need to travel to expensive resorts. Providing that unique island charm that feels like something straight from the Caribbean, tiki bars can recreate the setting of island paradise just about anywhere.

Those interested in the wonders of tiki culture should considering owning their own tiki bar. Whether for commercial or for private use, building and owning a tiki bar can be a fun and rewarding experience. It can also fill one with a great sense of pride and is a wonderful conversation topic.

Tiki bars can come in different shapes and sizes. The traditional tiki bar is based on the tiki hut which are found on islands. They are usually made of wood or bamboo, and the trademark thatched grass roofing. A full sized tiki bar can be quite an affair, emulating an environment of an island getaway resort.

Private tiki bars can be more variable depending on the requirements and budget of the owner. Poolside tiki bars are very popular, as well as backyard patio bars. Tiki bars can even be built indoors such as basement tiki bars- a pretty good source of awe and amusement for visiting relatives.

Wherever one wants to build their tiki bar, whatever size it is- the secret to having an exceptional and authentic tiki bar is in the décor one chooses to adorn their home-away-from home with. Nothing can better encapsulate the magic of the tropics quite like a well decorated tiki bar.

There are many types of tiki bar décor. They can range from the small to the enormous, the simple to the outrageous, and the cute to the downright freaky!

A good tiki bar should have some tiki totems, tiki masks and other such decorative items to give that distinctive native atmosphere. There are so many varieties of tiki décor to choose from. One can include anything they want. It's all good as long as it adds to the mood and party atmosphere.

One of the staples of a good tiki bar are funky tiki signs. There's no better way to declare your presence than a huge, flamboyant tiki sign hovering over the bar entrance to welcome your patrons. Tiki signs aren't limited to the bar entrance though, and should be placed anywhere and everywhere, including the restrooms, to mark restricted areas, or just to let people know how proud you are of your cool, vintage surfboard.

Even better is to have your tiki sign actually be your cool, vintage surfboard. Tiki signs can be made from a variety of different materials such as driftwood, surfboards or even canoe paddles. Carvings of fish or other aquatic life also make wonderful signs and ooze style. Just be sure to hang a "gone surfing" sign to let people know when your away.

A hallmark of the tiki culture is the moai. Moai are the famous monolithic statues found on Easter Island. These moai take the shape of giant heads, and according to legend, are said to hold the mystic powers of deceased clan chiefs.

They can also make really cool decorative items! Some people might find some difficulty finding space for a 50 foot monolith moai in their tiki bars; though thankfully moai decorations come in many different shapes and sizes to work with.

Miniature moai carvings are very popular. They work nicely as wall hangings or table pieces. You can even put them in the restrooms for a unique decoration.

One of the most important items in a tiki bar are the special tiki mugs to serve those groovy drinks in. Serve your wicked concoctions in mugs shaped like totem poles of ancient gods or with the somewhat less creepy glasses printed with dancing hula girls in grass skirts.

These are just a few examples of tiki bar décor. There are many more special tiki items available. The best thing about starting a tiki bar now is that these, sometimes difficult to find specialty items can be easily acquired via the internet!

Just remember that the proper decorations can really make or brake a tiki bar. So don't be afraid to go all out. Be creative and remember to have fun!

Lee Dobbins writes for http://tiki.subjectwise.com where you can learn more about creating your own tiki bar and having a smashing tiki party.
