Who built the easter island statues???????????

At first, I thought it was Rapa Nui, but then I found out that was another name for the island. I learned that the statues were called moai. I really would like to know who built them. Thanks for your help in advance.

The monolithic statues of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) are called moai in the Rapanui language. Carved on the island by the ancestors of the current population, approximately 50% of the total of 887 statues documented to date still remain in the immediate vicinity of Rano Raraku, the quarry in which they were produced. The majority of the remaining statues were transported to and erected upon a variety of ceremonial structures called ahu. This feat is one of the great megalithic achievements of Pacific

What does the word "moai" mean?

Yes, the Easter Island statues.

"Moˀai" are monolithic human figures carved from rock on Rapa Nui / Easter Island, mostly between 1250 and 1500 CE. Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku the main Moai quarry, but hundreds were transported from there and set on Ahu (platforms) which were mostly at the islands perimeter. Almost all have overly large heads three fifths the size of their body. The Moai are the “living faces” (aringa ora) and representations of chiefly, deified ancestors. Sitting on their Ahus with their backs to the sea, these statues were still gazing across their clan lands when European first visited the island, but most were then cast down during conflict between different clans on the island."

Moai or mo‘ai (pronounced /ˈmoʊ.аɪ/) are monolithic human figures carved from rock on the Polynesian island of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) between 1250 and 1500 CE. Nearly half are still at Rano Raraku, the main moai quarry, but hundreds were transported from there and set on stone platforms called Ahu around the island's perimeter. Almost all moai have overly large heads three-fifths the size of their bodies. The moai are chiefly the 'living faces' (aringa ora) of deified ancestors (aringa ora ata tepuna). The statues still gazed inland across their clan lands when Europeans first visited the island, but most would be cast down during later conflicts between clans.

The statues' production and transportation is considered a remarkable intellectual, creative, and physical feat. The tallest moai erected, called Paro, was almost 10 metres (33 ft) high and weighed 75 tonnes; the heaviest erected was a shorter but squatter moai at Ahu Tongariki, weighing 86 tons; and one unfinished sculpture, if completed, would have been approximately 21 metres (69 ft) tall with a weight of about 270 tons.

Can anyone give me tips about Easter Island (Chile)?

It is called the Belly Button of the World. It´s where those hugs statues (Moai) stand.

I went there on 2001. It is a fascinating place. First you have to catch a plane to Santiago to make the connection to Easter Island, which literally is in the middle of the Pacific ocean! It is not a big island and as there is only one flight coming in every week and one going out, people from the island get to know you and even greet you when they see you walking by! I stayed at Hotel Hanga Roa which was ok but now they have opened Explora hotel which is much, much better. Dont expect air conditioning as there is none in the island. However, these two hotels (there's a third one and some hostels but cant remember their names) are very nice. The best beach is Anakena, beautiful waters and it's like paradise. There are several things to see there apart from the Moais, there are two major volcanoes there (ranu raraku is the best) and they will take you in the tour. Handicrafts are very expensive, I guess the people there live out of tourism and they might be a bit exagerrated
in their prices. Food is ok, although I found an excellent restaurant called La Maison du paicheur whichis owned by a french guy who is a chef and stayed there after falling in love with a woman there. Overall, it;s an experience which you'll never forget! I took some dance lessons from one of the girls there, wonderful polynesian dance!

Not very good food, nice people, nice dance, nice hostels and hotels near the beach.

Chilean

What is the right direction of the statues (moai) at easter island?

The moai and ceremonial sites are along the coast, with a concentration on Easter Island's southeast coast. Here, the moai are more 'standardized' in design, and are believed to have been carved, transported, and erected between AD 1400 and 1600. They stand with their backs to the sea and are believed by most archaeologists to represent the spirits of ancestors, chiefs, or other high-ranking males who held important positions in the history of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, the name given by the indigenous people to their island in the 1860s.

One theory is that the statues were positioned as they were so the Easter Islanders could pray to them. The statues were seen as intermediaries between earth and heaven.

Here's a website which you could look at to learn more:

Is Korg of Hulk's Warbound suppose to be based off the Moai Statues?

His Head looks pretty similar to the heads of the Moai statues?

It doesn't seem that the Kronans (Korg's race) were intended to be Moai, they're just another Kirbian stone race:

http://www.marvunapp.com/Appendix/kronanst.htm

However, it's possible that at some point the Moai in the Marvel Universe will be retconned to have been inspired by the Kronans.

Note, though...the overall body shape of a Kronan is decidedly different from the bodies of Moai (some of which do have visible bodies).

What rock was used to make the Moai Statues on Easter island in Chile?

All but 53 of the 887 moai known to date were carved from tuff (a compressed volcanic ash). At the end of carving they would rub the statue with pumice from Rano Raraku, where 394 moai and incomplete moai are still visible today (there are also 13 moai carved from basalt, 22 from trachyte and 17 from fragile red scoria.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui) isn't in Chile. It is a Polynesian island, but is a territory of Chile.

"Easter Island (Rapa Nui: Rapa Nui, Spanish: Isla de Pascua) is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, at the southeastern most point of the Polynesian triangle. The island is a special territory of Chile."

Basalt

Doh yeah your right basalt would be too hard to carve easily

tuff it is

Would you rather live in a pineapple, underneath a rock or inside a Moai statue?

I say the statue. But the rock would help my upper-body strength, and the pineapple would always smell nice.:](but I'd be afraid that it would rot...)

inside a Moai statue

What's with the Sponge Bob Questions (shudder .. my children (as teens no less!) liked to watch that series -- it was horrible!)

In a pineapple! I could eat my way out!!! :^)

What was the pupose did the giant moai statue have on Easter Island?

I think I heard that different villages on Easter Island made them to scare off evil spirits. The statues acted as protecters, and eventually, different villages competed to make the biggest and the best of the statues. This led to their downfall because they used up their natural resources building them, and they possibly died of a famine or disease, so I've heard, maybe lol.

look here, to much information ....

Nobody knows. The statues have been around for a long time, and nobody remembers why they were erected.

What purpose was there in building Christ of the Andes?

Where can i find moai totems on My Sims for the wii?

i have the desert map and i have checked were you would find puppy, tiger and elephant essences(prospected for 1hr 30 min) and i have checked the forest, town can someone help me please. xxx

Has anyone ever taken the new anti-depressant Ensam, a MOAI patch that came out last year?

Does it really work any better than SSRI type drugs,if so,by how much better and what are some of the side effects as well?

i don't know anything about that specific medication, but MAOI's are tricky to deal with. you have to watch what you eat because things like blue cheese can cause bad reactions. almost all other medications can cause bad, sometimes fatal reactions. you cannot take SSRI's within 14 days of stopping an MAOI, and vice versa.

not all medications are for everyone. you would have to talk to your doctor to see if it would work for you.

i looked up more information on it. and the small dosage (20mg) doesn't have the food warnings, but larger doses still do. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20071023010529AAUMmHV&kid=Fr11H1X7Cm62UXHglj.U&s=comm&date=2007-10-23+14%3A06%3A41&.crumb=

check out side effects and diet/drug restrictions on this class of drugs before making any decisions.

antidepressants will never work and here is why http://www.cchr.org

Depression is manifested both physically and emotionally. The classic physical signs of depression are headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, hyperactivity, sleeping disorders, loss of concentration, and distorted eating patterns.

Chemicals imbalances in the brain can also be either the cause or effect of depression. Dopamine is the chemical that produces anxiety, stress, nervousness, and aggression. When the level of dopamine is ELEVATED, a person may develop feelings of insecurity, paranoia, and fear. Serotonin is another important chemical in the brain that can affect a person's mental well-being.

A person with LOW serotonin levels displays mood swings, and some sort of compulsion, such as alcoholism, overeating, or being a workaholic, perfectionist, or procrastinator.

Best ways to beat depression is Diet, Exercise, Supplements or Therapy.

Its essential to get the B-complex vitamins, since they work together to balance proper brain functioning.

Fatty acids, such Omega-6, Omega-3.

Magnesium and herbal extracts such:

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum in Latin) is a long-living plant with yellow flowers. It contains many chemical compounds.
